I have been trying to find a decent recording of Au Lac on YouTube - but both Cziffra and Berman play it too fast. I believe Andante Placido means that Lizst wants calm and contemplation, but Cziffra and Berman want to include speed boats for some reason. Those lovely triplets which begin most bars in the left hand seem to lose their beauty and distinctiveness at a faster tempo. Also, both pianists over pedal -I don't want to hear Debussy like blurriness.
So, does anyone know if Brendel or Arrau or anyone else plays this correctly? I am happy with buying the whole Annes set obvioulsy -
I may well learn this piece - it seems well within my capabilities technically - a few leaps and akward rhythms, but nothing too terryifying. I can't play it worse than Cziffra anyhow.
