Au Lac de Wallenstadt-
on: November 27, 2011, 03:07:35 PM
I have been trying to find a decent recording of Au Lac on YouTube - but both Cziffra and Berman play it too fast.  I believe Andante Placido means that Lizst wants calm and contemplation, but Cziffra and Berman want to include speed boats for some reason. Those lovely triplets which begin most bars in the left hand seem to lose their beauty and distinctiveness at a faster tempo. Also, both pianists over pedal -I don't want to hear Debussy like blurriness.

So, does anyone know if Brendel or Arrau or anyone else plays this correctly? I am happy with buying the whole Annes set obvioulsy -

I may well learn this piece - it seems well within my capabilities technically - a few leaps and akward rhythms, but nothing too terryifying. I can't play it worse than Cziffra anyhow.  :o

Au Lac de Wallenstadt starts at 6:17, and I hope it is what you are looking for... but I recommend, if you have time, to listen to the whole video...The playing is first rate! :)

Haha speed boats, yeah ;D. Fortunately I haven't yet encountered some of those on that wonderful lake, so far :)

perhaps you'll like this one by Kempff:

I was looking for Arrau, but couldn't find one yet.

Ah, sorry, I just have to chime in that this all makes me so badly want to play this piece again.  It's like it's part of me.  And, I think you have shown me that photo before, Wolfi, one way or another, but the lake just somehow feels so familiar to me.  Like home. :)  Thanks for posting both the photo and the YT.

:) :)

Yeah :)

I have been there so often :) And it also makes me want to practice this piece, finally. I have been there so often in a hotel near the lake, and I have seen the piano in the hallway, and always dreamed of being able to sit down there and play this piece, but I had never practiced it, so I was never ready, and didn't touch that piano.... I feel kinda stupid! Argh! *Goes practice*

Btw there are a few villages at that lake who are named like the musical intervals in German/Latin (because we use the latin number words for this) Quinten, Quarten, Terzen. There are also Oberterzen and Unterterzen, like major and minor third :) I think Liszt might have known this. Especially Quinten is very beautiful, it's on the eastern side of the lake, you can only reach it by boat or by foot and they grow delicious wine there. Yeah, it's really a sort of musical lake :)

Listened to Brendl play this as an encore during his farewell tour (2 years ago?). He was even slower than in the video posted here - but with an unearthly singing tone.
A very beautiful piece and not too hard to learn. Very hard to play it like the master, though. And I agree - most play it too fast.

;D  Thanks to those who responded. I appreciate it. I especially enjoyed the Kempff - and Brendel is awesome also.  Never heard Ashkenazy play Liszt -Will have to employ Google to discover if Bolet and Arrau have recorded this - At the moment I want the versions by Brendel and Kempff!
