Bach WTC on audition
on: November 28, 2011, 05:34:20 PM
Hi folks!

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but I'm unable to find any good suggestions, so I try:

Which Bach WTC prelude+fugue do you suggest on an audition for music school?

Which one of them is regarded as the more (not "the most" because that is subjective and impossible to say) difficult ones?

If the audition program is of high tempo and pace etc, I would think that something like WTC I, no. 4 (in C# minor) would be appropriate? What do you think of that?

Looking forward to some nice suggestions! :-)

P.S. If you have the URL to a similar topic discussed before, it would be nice too.

honestly i think you should just pick the one you like the most. you're more likely to practice it with more focus, put more into the performance, and thus most probably give the best audition on it especially if they specify if in their audition requirements that it can come from either volume with no exclusions. i'd also balance it with your other pieces, if you already have very demanding works and you like a 'simpler' one, better to go with that, play all works to a very high level and best showcases both your current abilities and capacity to improve than crash an burn on big difficult standards.

I used No. 16 in G minor from book 1 for my auditions. I find it allows quite a bit of freedom to interpret in many different ways, thus your musicality can really shine.

I would pick one that is at least in the ATCL list for Trinity as many of the others i feel, would be considered to easy to use at University auditions.

It doesn't really matter. They want to see if you can comprehend contrapuntal textures and understand the Baroque era.

That being said, I would stay away from C major and C minor from book 1 and d minor book 2 as everyone and their mother auditions with that piece.

I think the C# minor you mentioned would work just fine. But I feel like you should not focus on something that is slow because it is slow, but instead find one that is a good fit and you can perform well.

Best wishes,

Edit: What are your other audition pieces?
