Does anyone have any ideas as to what pictures these etudes are based on? we know that no. 2 is about the sea & seagulls and that no. 6 is red riding hood & the wolf. i don't think rachmaninov divulged any information about the others. i'm playing the set at the moment so any comments would be really appreciated. thanks

Hello. :) First, I think you are a bit confused... ::) Not Rachmaninoff gave these names to his pieces. Second, Rachmaninoff once said (I don't know the source but probably it's wiki or something) that every pianist may create an image of his own while playing his etudes. Hope it helped you. And third, Op.39 no.7 is sometimes called Funeral March.  :)
Current repertoire:
Bach Toccata in E minor
Beethoven Sonata op.110
Rachmaninov Corelli Variations
Liszt Paganini Etudes No.2 and 6.
Strauss Burlesque in d minor, Brahms piano concerto No.2.
