What pieces to choose?
on: December 11, 2011, 12:34:35 PM
Hello! I am having a small concert in the parish where I live pretty soon and I wonder which piece of these you think will be best suited as the extra number:
Impromptu op.90 no 3 (Schubert)
Moment Musical no 3 or 4 (Schubert)
Minute Waltz (Chopin)
Nocturne op.9 no 2 (Chopin)
Fantasia K.397 (Mozart)
Clair de Lune (Debussy)
Goldberg Variations Aria (Bach)
Bagatelle op.126 no 4 (Beethoven)
The pieces that I am going to play in the main program are:
Mozart K.311 and K.545
Beethoven Sonata op.13 or op.27 no 2
Schubert Sonata D.664 and D.959
What do you guys think? Thank you in advance!

You're playing BOTH those schubert sonatas? Back to back?! That's quite a bit for a "small concert in a parish" public to put up with. They're even in the same key! Why can't you do some of the impromptus or moments musicaux instead of one of those sonatas? I would go for the D.664. I don't know. Mozart - Beethoven - Schubert - You can't get much more classical then that. What is the extra piece for? An encore? I can't see any of those pieces serving for anything else - certainly not in the programme you've mentioned. You have all sonatas - that, in itself, is very limiting. Not even Kempff ever played such a programme, unless it was part of a Beethoven cycle, or something.
I'm curious. How are you ordering your programme? At any rate, if the "extra number" you're referring to is an encore, stick with Schubert, mozart (not the fantasy - maybe the "alla turca")or Beethoven.

I would drop one of the schubert sonatas and go with the schubert imprmptu in g flat. Playing just sonatas seems pretty tough.....

I am sorry, of course I mean I am going to play D. 959 OR D. 664 by Schubert, K. 311 OR K. 545 by Mozart and Op. 13 OR Op. 27 no 2 by Beethoven. And then one of the pieces I told you about as an encore.

That's what I was thinking too, but I am so much in love with D. 959 and its Andantino movement, so that's going to be hard, but k. 311 and moonlight is decided. Then it's stands between the fantasy by Mozart and Impromptu by Schubert
