Best Digital Piano recording on YouTube?
on: December 14, 2011, 06:34:37 PM
So why does this particular recording sound so fine?  Does he use a touch of reverb -great quality mics? I dunno - but I found the playing and sound enchanting!

Some digital instruments have the ability to be recorded straight to a device or computer. If you browse the video description, the person mentions this.

'The sound was recorded directly to a WAV file on a USB key (a very nice feature that the CLP-950 lacked).'

A very neat feature to avoid relying on the inbuilt speakers. :3

What makes you say that it sound so good?
The sound is rather lifeless. Hardly good.

The Clavinola just seemed to stand out from a lot of other recordings - maybe it is just that I love Chopin a lot - who knows.  I did find the sound good though.

Probably the sound it produces makes it sound really nice. The tone sounded really nice and the notes played were really clear.

I agree with Winkle. Hardly a good sound.

I didn't think it sounded too great, but it certainly sounded better than some digital pianos I've heard. By the way, I always thought this digital piano sounded pretty good:

Didn't sound as nice on an acoustic upright or grand but still IMO worth mentioning.  however there are huge cuts and inappropriate articulation and shaping. I think it is pretty lively but probably because it is really fast.

I find that the soft notes at the end of the phrases jump right out as sounding digital. A good acoustic piano would easily translate this player's technique into sensitive phrasing with a lot more emotion. Likewise, the loud portions don't sound full enough to my ears. I found this thread because I'm doing some recording for a pop song -- unfortunately, the piece calls for some solo piano, and I'm going to have to spend money to get my baby grand up to speed for recording. My kurzweil is a toy compared to an acoustic, only suitable for recording when buried by other instruments in a band.

No digital piano is ever going to have the tactile response of a real piano, especially a grand. I suppose Yamaha have got closest with the N1. It is not a good looking instrument though - looks like a coffin to me! Also of course you are still limited by the programming and sampling to some extent.

Ideal for the Chopin Funeral March I suppose.  :P

For just over 5 thousand pounds UK price - the N1 is interesting if you want to play with headphones sometimes and don't have the money, room or tolerant enough neighbours for a real grand.

That's so true but if you listen through your headphones it will sound even more soft...
Specially the soft notes at the end of the phrases, just observed them, simply amazing digital piano.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
