Chickering, 6'3, restored, 1920
on: December 15, 2011, 11:37:00 PM
Hi everyone,
I would like some help when it comes to determining whether this piano is a good purchase. It's a Chickering Grand built 1920 which is 6'3. Supposedly it's been totally restored with new hammers, soundboard, strings, etc, as well as with a totally refinished cabinet.
The asking price is around 10K. Obviously I would have to try it, but it's quite a drive and so before I go through with even a visit, I wanted to make sure that it's even a good deal on the face of it. I'm not totally sure of the characteristics of this piano. Personally I dislike Yamaha but love Steinway and also like Baldwins, so not sure if that gives some guidance as to whether I'd like this particular sound.
Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

It may be very good or not so good. If you can bring some piano technician you trust. My tech told me that Chickering use to be a great piano, but very difficult to restore because of a lack of standards, unlike Steinway. If restoration was decent, this is a great deal. I wish you the best of luck!
