Struggling to play different tempos in LH & RH
on: December 25, 2011, 03:58:30 AM
I am fairly new to the piano. Recently I have been working on the Goldberg Variations and have found that I am having difficulty playing a trill in the right hand while playing the bass notes in the left hand at different tempos. For some reason I can not get my RH and LH to work individually. I am not trying to become a concert pianist and realize that some of this is just due to the fact that I am not gifted with pianistic ability. However, I was wondering if there are any drills or advice anyone could offer that would assist me with this problem.

Thanks!!!!!!

I don't know how new you are to the piano but the goldberg variations are quite advanced, have you ever learned any easier Bach pieces before that? Because the problem you are having is a beginner issue, anyone ready to play the goldberg variations shouldn't even have this problem, I would advice you to learn invention no1 first, there.he works a lot on this thrill problem you are having in a easier form.

Caioramos is right. The Goldberg Variations is not a beginner piece. Bach Inventions would probably be a good place to start. Josh Wright has a good video on playing trills:

Somewhere in his video, Josh Wright says that he isn't very good at playing trills.  I'd be inclined to ask my teacher if I were the OP and also think like the others that it's rather early to play the Goldberg Variations.

Bach's inventions are essentially preparations for the more advanced pieces. Why don't you try a few inventions first, to get your mind and your fingers familiar with the individual hand action?
To learn trills, you should practice the section/bar without the trill; when it's fluent, add the trill in every other time you play-- the trill should not slow down your playing-- learning the piece without the trill first will guarantee a smooth product in the end.

There are ways of approaching trills which are taught first with the Inventions.  We don't know if the OP has a teacher who assigned the Goldberg variations, and we have also not heard back from him or her.

Thanks for the responses!!

I took piano as a young child for about a year before quitting and just started it up again about 4 months ago. I wanted to try my hand at the goldberg aria mainly because it was the piece that got me interested in playing music. The shame of it is that I can play it pretty well (in my opinion and my teachers.. its not near concert quality but its decent) but I do struggle with the being able to control both hands individually. As a result I generally have to cut some trills off prematurely which interferes with the flow and tone of the music imo.

I have taken a look at the inventions and they look like a good stepping stone for me at this point. I also watched the video and it was very helpful with the trills. Hopefully with a little work I will be able to get to the point where I can play the goldberg how I invision it. I really want to thank everyone who has commented for putting me in the right direction.  :) :)
