Yr 12 Musicianship Help!!
on: December 30, 2011, 01:25:41 AM
For my Year 12 music study next year, one of the projects I have to do is an arrangement. I should already know by now what song I'll be arranging but sadly, I have nooo idea!

So, do yous have any traditional folk songs or other songs that it could be well arranged into an orchestra or something??

Need your help guys! thanks! :)

i've really liked this since working on the kabalevsky 3rd sonata's final  movement,

it's one of the most popular russian folk songs,
Kalinka

score to get you started on playing with the notes i've included a version with both basic melodic parts and the implied harmonies you should be able to do quite a bit with this, a basic youtube kalinka search will yield a plethora of ideas.

That would be a great one to do!

How about 'Poor Wayfaring Stranger'? I can't really find a good decent recording of it, but it would be cool arranging it into a String Orchestra.
What do yous think about that?

Any more suggestions? :)

do you have to arrange for orchestra..?  can you arrange an orchestral piece for piano? or for that matter is a solo piano arrangement from a lead sheet sufficient? ..

I think string quartet arrangement is cool.. or arranging for guitar and voice may present quite a fun challenge if you are unfamiliar with playing the guitar (you'd have to figure out how to voice chords for guitar in such a way that they sound good and can actually be played)

Well it doesn't have to be orchestra, but it must have 6 or more instruments.

String quartet would be fun, but need more instruments. Could probably chuck in a piano and something else, but I do think if do orchestra and do it well I will get a higher score.

Maybe a chamber orchestra..?

can you arrange a solo piano piece to orchestra or something?

I think if you work on one of Debussy prelude it will be nice  :)  (like fire works or general lavine)

maybe try arranging for wind ensemble vs orchestra? (this way you can play with things like saxophone etc.)

The arrangement must have a maximum of 40 bars and minimum of 34 so I don't have much to play around with.
I assumed to go with a traditional folk song because it normally is already an easy arrangement itself.

I've never arranged something for wind ensemble so that's not a bad idea   :)   but I reckon I'll go with an orchestra... or a string orchestra...?

Oh gosh, I don't know :-\
