Hello. I'm also new here.
on: January 02, 2012, 01:20:27 AM
Hey. My name is Bytecry. I'm 14 years old and starting to get into piano. I'm still not sure whether to self teach or to formally get lessons. I'm currently brushing up on some basic music theory and thought a online forum to discuss stuff would be helpful. If any of you could link me to some helpful books and some easy (but at the same time challenging) songs, that will be of great help.

Hi Bytecry,
welcome on board!
If I may give you some advices: get a good teacher; draw on this wonderful forum, it'll help you a lot (in particulare, read the posts of Bernhard, and follow his approach: he is a God in the piano teaching field! you'll find there many useful suggestions about beginners' repertoire; read the book (and above all watch the attached video) of Syemour Fink, Mastering piano technique. Chang's Fundamental of piano practice (you'll find it  online for free) is also rich of useful advices.

Good luck!
Margherita

Hi ByteCry
Nice of you to come across this forum. It is never too early nor too late to start the piano and you can play well even from this age. Please read alot of posts to enlighten yourself. You may want to work on some etudes, like Burgmuller, Heller, etc and definitely not Czerny which is a waste of time. Perhaps also some Scarlatti, Grieg Lyric pieces, Bartok Mikrokosmos, and some Kabalevesky too.

(in particulare, read the posts of Bernhard, and follow his approach: he is a God in the piano teaching field!

And not to mention Birba's posts too, who IMO has taken full responsibility since Bernhard's disappearance.
