So...I'm looking to upgrade my digital
on: January 02, 2012, 01:20:39 AM
Today I've got a Yamaha NP30 that has served me well. But I'm starting to really recognize the need for weighted set of 88 keys. I'm thinking of getting something in the €400-€600 range or so. Preferably a stage piano model, as I can't quite fit an upright-sized piano in my current living space.
My current to-do list:
* Yann Tiersen
~ La Valse d'Amélie
* Beethoven
~ "Pathétique" II. Adagio
* Petzold
Menuet in G minor (BWV 115)
* Satie
- Gymnopédie No. 3

Check out the Yamaha CP line. I have a CP5 but I don't know how much you're willing to go being that this one is on the pricy side. CP50 or CP33 would be a good choice too...

Yeah, that's a bit too far on the pricey side for my wallet I'm afraid. I'd like to keep it within 400-600€ (euro) But could stretch it to 700€ if it's a really good model for the price.
My current to-do list:

~ La Valse d'Amélie
* Beethoven
~ "Pathétique" II. Adagio

Menuet in G minor (BWV 115)

What ever you do stay with Yamaha. If you plan to play through earphones and record wire  to wire, Yamaha has some models in your price range. You can always add an amp later if you need one.

Yeah, I don't mind headphones at all. That's one of a couple reasons I'm sticking with digital at the moment. What models would you suggest? The one's Jimbo suggested are sadly a bit too expensive (1000EUR+)

Try some Roland digitals, the Yamaha Clavinova and go to several local piano shops and try them. See which ones you like and compare the prices.
Funny? How? How am I funny?

see if you can get a nice deal on a very well cared for used kawai digital. my god the action on those for a digi is amazing (i.e. wood parts, closest to grand action you will get on on non acoustic instrument).

I know the Yamaha CLP440 and above are amazing instruments. But, please, for crying out loud. I don't have €2000 to spend, I have €400-600. If you'd respect my budget range when making your suggestions, that would be fantastic.

Here's for the lazy if you need to do some converting
€100 EUR = $130 USD
$100 USD = €76 EUR

May I suggest a Yamaha DXG-640. It's within your budget and I think you'll find it satisfactory...

Jimbo and I are big Yamaha fans. He is a little more up to date on the current models. My P-85 keyboard continues to serve me very well, now almost three years old. I seldom use my external amps. Most of the time I practice with earphones.

One little advantage that is seldom mentioned is the midi interface. If you plan to write music on your computer, inputting the notes from a keyboard is a lot easier than pointing a mouse at the note position.

My P-85 was US$700 from Guitar Center.

It certainly is! Is the USB interface for recording worth the price difference when compared to say, the P-95?

I am quite a Yamaha fan myself. The P95 which is essentially a P85 with some minor updates is also fairly cheap and at the moment the leading contender together with the DGX640.

A runner-up is the Korg SP250, any thoughts on that one? Anyone familiar with it?

Bring your earphones with you when you try out the keyboards. Also consider where the jacks are located and how they (and the cords) will affect your installation. Good luck!
