Underrated pieces?
on: January 02, 2012, 07:50:47 PM
What are a few pieces you feel should get far more credit than they have gotten? Specifically recognized composers
A few of mine are
Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 1 (I feel as though Saint Saens is underrated in general)
Sviridov's Choral Works

Here are definite pieces that don't get enough recognition:

Prokofiev - Piano Sonata No.1
Bach - French Suite No.6
Mendelssohn - Piano Concerto No.1 and 2

There are too many piano concertos that don't get the recognition that they deserve (i.e. Bronsart, Pabst, Castro (Third movement is kind of bleh), Henselt, Scriabin, and many others.)

Instead everyone wants to play the old, tired piano concertos (i.e Chopin 1, Grieg, Schumann, Rachmaninoff 1-3, etc.)

Why not lets just forget about the neglected works by famous composers and focus on the neglected composers first? I'm  talking about anything by Thalberg, Herz, Lyapunov, Henselt, Alkan, Catoire etc.

Agreed.

John Field's 18 Nocturnes
I don't know if Dvorak's Humoresques should be on the list. Anyway, I enjoyed it.  ;D

Brahms - Sextet Variations Op 18 are just as good as the more well known variations
Dvorak - Humoresques Op 101
Rimsky-Korsakov - Piano Concerto
Balakirev - Toccata
Sibelius - All of his piano music in general and specifically his Piano Sonata
Stravinsky - his piano music also deserves more of an airing, especially the Scherzo
John Cage - In a Landscape

I agree, I really like Sibelius (but  rather orchestral works, though). Also Second Rhapsody, Variations on "I Got Rhythm" or even Concerto in F by Gershwin is not very famous, but not everyone considers him classical composer.

Best regards, Dr

I think you'll enjoy this, i quite literally laugh out loud (at the very least a very boisterous chuckle) when i see this, i love this film, an american in paris, they really don't make great cinema like this anymore, also if you have't watched it, the the closing dance number of the movie is one of the more incredible on the movie musical genre.

really great scene with gershwin excerpt where he, played by pianist Oscar Levant  (the concert pianist who comically has never given a concert in public in the film, dreams of performing the work conducted and accompanied by himself, this is one of my favorite youtube videos)

Castro (Third movement is kind of bleh)

The 3rd movement for me, completely ruins the work. It is if it was written by someone else.

Enrique I'm left in a weird state due to the video you posted....simply magnificent

I'd also propose rondo capriccioso op. 14 by mendelssohn. Not sure though how well known it is.

Speaking of Mendelssohn, you can add the delightful Gondola Song in A major to the list and also the hugely underrated Song Without Words Op 67, No 2 which is simply exquisite.

I really want to hear the complete set of the Thalberg and Herz etudes after seeing the sheet music. They have to be at least as hard as the Chopin etudes. I've only heard the Thalberg etude allegro in B minor.

i posted two but i think it applies to either one, yeah those two performances blow me away.

another 'underrated' composer in general but especially this work, is albeniz, i love playing him (though i'll admnit i haven't visted his music in a number of years), the concerto is quite nice

I just heard Thalberg's piano concerto on the radio and I was not impressed.   The last movement seems endlessly repetitious, and the piano writing sounds like early Chopin (as in the La Ci Darem variations).

My personal favorites include

Grieg's Variations on a Norwegian theme

Beethoven's whole Moonlight Sonata (I really don't get everyone obsession with the first movement, the other two, in my opinion, are much better)

And finally, even though this isn't a piano piece, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet which has moved out of the lime light and been replaced by his first Piano Concerto.

Andante Lagrimoso (No. 9) from the Harmonies Poetiques et Religeuses by Liszt. It actually might be the most gorgeous piece I've ever heard.

Alot of the Harmonies Poetiques et Religeuses are underrated, but this one in particular stands out for me.
