Piano keys problem
on: January 03, 2012, 02:52:45 AM
Hey guys, I've recently gotten this Baldwin spinet from a guy who was selling it online. The only major problem is that in the lower register (about C1 and C2), when I press one key, the other keys parallel to it presses down as well. Does anyone know why this is caused? Or how to fix it?

Cheers.

Yes, I obviously know that. I was just wondering if someone had the same problem a time ago and they could have told me about it. Or, if there is a piano technician on the forum who can enlighten me about my piano problem. Obviously, I'll get a piano technician soon. Just wanted some guesses and what not

If you are mechanically inclined open up the piano and take a look at the action.  It may be something as simple as a pencil that fell into the action.  If you don't see anything that is obvious, call your piano tech.  It is best not to fiddle around inside the piano if you are not familiar doing such things.

Ok, I did take a look inside of it. The hammers seem to be all working. I didnt find anything inside or near them. Perhaps it's just warping from humidity in the piano. Least I hope it's something as simple as that. Thanks. Yeah I'll get a technician on that as soon as I can.

Could be a pencil or another object lying horizontally along the whippens inside the bridle tape wires…
Could also be travelling center pins. As the instrument has recently been purchased and moved it will require service. When you book a technician for a tuning, mention the repairs so the person is prepared to book time for that part too.

If you think it's is expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.

Yes, I have actually found the problem. Turns out I did not look good enough. Some how a Nokia phone managed to fit it's self right under the keyboard inside of the piano.. go figure. Thanks guys.

:D never heard that one before.  Did you at least get some free minutes  :P

I remember one time a flautist resting their flute on the music rack of a grand piano.  It fell in between the fallboard (as so often pencils do).
