Playing hands at different volumes
on: January 06, 2012, 11:08:57 PM
Hi all! I am new here and am an adult beginner. I have been playing for just a couple months now. I have been having difficulty playing chords softer than the melody. That is, I will be playing chords with my left hand and melody with my right. I am having difficulty playing the left hand chords softer so that the melody being played by the right hand can be heard. Any advice? Thanks!

Here is a trick - with just your left hand, play your left chords  very loud and staccato. then very soft and gentle. You might notice that you are able to play much softer than before. Then  place your thumbs an octave apart and just focus on just making your left thumb play soft while your right thumb plays loud. Then do vice versa, and practice with all fingers individually loud, soft. When you practice your scales, practice keeping the left hand softer than the right hand.  this will take a little practice but once you realize that control, you will always have it.  It is good that you understand the importance of bringing out the melody
