Beethoven Sonatas - where to go next?
on: September 12, 2004, 11:33:30 AM
I've learn't Pathetique, which was pretty easy, now I'm just polishing the 27/01 (in Eb) which is a fair bit more tricky. I want to learn another one, that isn't quite so awkward - I'm looking at one (I think it's no.9, not sure on opus), any others?

Have a look here:

Both me and Hmoll have supplied a list of all the sonatas in progressive order of difficulty (the lists are slightly different - which makes it interesting ;))

Take your pick!

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Are you leaning towards earlier or later sonatas?

I'd learn one of the less frequently played sonatas.  Here are a few I like:

Op. 2 No. 2
Op. 14 No. 1 and 2
Op. 22
Op. 26
Op. 78
Op. 79
Op. 90

I don't think any of the sonatas I listed would be too hard for you. I'm learning Op. 78 now. It's a nice work and with only two movements, wouldn't take that long to learn.

I think I will go with op.14 no.1, but I haven't heard all those ones yet. But I really like no.2 from same opus as well. :\

I've never really played much of Beethoven, and I'd really like to start 'bulking' up my repetoire...the op.14 no.1 seems straight forwards enough, no.2 seems a bit more difficult with those right hand runs, but I'm sure its managable. Makes a refreshing change from Debussy Etudes thats for sure...

If you feel up to a real challenge I would recommend op. 101.  It's one of his most difficult sonatas, but has a delightful opening, and is in general a very fun and beautiful piece in my opinion.  Not overplayed at all.
