New Upright Sugg. To Play for 3/4 years
on: January 12, 2012, 01:55:10 AM
This websight looks terrific.  I just started playing piano last year, and I'm looking to ditch my Korg electric I bought to learn on for a acustic.  Still very early in my learning and i can't seem to justify buying what I think I should (a 6' + good maker grand) - just yet.   So, I've figured on buying a New Upright for serveral years to get my feet wet and then sell it for a more serious piano.
My question for the experienced piano people is "Which One- since I don't want it to be a lifetime purchase, the re-sale is important."  -  Which Uprights (brand - model) would everyone suggest for purchasing New - for playing quality and fun - & -  That will relitively well hold it's value a few years?

Great to have found this WebSight

bobo:

Everyone has their favorites and it would be a disservice to you trying to name a best. There are so many great, good, not so good uprights out there. Best for you to take your time and get acquainted with as many different pianos as you can. I will however recommend to try a 43" piano that I really admire and own:

I don't quite understand your logic here. Buy the best piano you can afford and have played in a showroom, or whatever, and love.  It is always better to own something you feel happy to own and not some short term makeweight. You only live once.
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

I was in the same position as you a while back, so I might be able to help.

I went to a lot of different piano warehouses, stores etc. and I talked to a lot of different people about this and that helped me narrow down my selection. That's usually the best way to find which piano you want, because piano store owners will be able to give you a lot of good ideas of good pianos to buy. You should probably look up on the internet what piano stores are near you, go to them, and talk to the people there.

For me, my first acoustic (upright) was a Pearl River. I used mine for about three years until I got a grand. I still have the upright now, and it is still holding up very well! I think it is about six years old now. I don't think they are very expensive either. I believe mine was somewhere between 2.5-3K. This is just what I started with though. It doesn't necessarily mean its the best piano for you, its just an idea.

And, just so you know, you might want to consider buying whatever piano you choose at a store, so you can test it out and see if you like it first. Sometimes people order pianos straight off the internet with no idea of how good or bad they sound.

Had no idea piano's were so different.   Have been playing a friends Steinway recently and it's nice enough to play, certainly better than the upright in my local school music room I tried.   That's the only 2 acustic piano's I've played.

I guess I really need to visit the piano store's and get to know what the different brands sound and feel like.   Cutting corners on parts, charging extra for - Oo you want the good action, that's extra.

Thanks ,  have to learn the finer details of what I'm buying.
