Piano pieces for Right Hand
on: January 17, 2012, 10:01:42 AM
Hearing the prelude of Scriabin for Left Hand mentioned on another thread I was wondering if there are similar works for the Right Hand.

There is a piano concerto by Henri Cliquet-Pleyel.

There are far less works for piano right hand than for piano let hand. One substantial right hand piece is the second of Alkan's Trois Grandes Études which have the misleading opus number of 76 (i.e. they weren't as late as that number might otherwise suggest); it's not the best of Alkan and its perilous difficulty is rare for him in that some parts of seem to be written against the instrument (or at least against the pianist) - usually, Alkan's work, however difficult to bring off, is at least practical.
Best,

Ned Rorem's 7th etude is for the right hand alone. Also, a movement of one of his piano concertos is for right hand alone (specifically, the first movement of his Piano Concerto in Six Movements).

There is also Malcolm Arnold's Concerto for 2 Pianos, 3 Hands, which requires one pianist to play with right hand alone.
