Edition of Mozart sonatas
on: January 18, 2012, 09:39:02 AM
Hi. I am in need of a new edition of the Mozart sonatas. I have the urtext, but need something that is more edited. Anyone got any advice? (please, no comments on how important to follow the Urtext only).

The same for Haydn would also be appreciated.

if i was going to stray from an urtext (you didn't mention which you used i.e henle, weiner viennna, or bärenreiter) I have read very good things about these:
https://www.samash.com/p/Theodore%20Presser_Mozart%20Sonatas%20and%20Fantasies%20for%20Piano_-49994754

here's one such review:
This is one of the most accurate available editions of the Mozart piano sonatas. The editor, Nathan Broder, has worked from Mozart's autographs (where these survive) and the earliest printed editions. (This would seem to be just what a careful editor should do, but it is surprising how many editions of these works published within the last 100 years have failed to take such precautions.) Broder's editorial additions are carefully bracketed, and an informative introduction and notes remark on points of interest regarding the texts and ornamentation of these sonatas.

There's also the ABRSM edition.  It comes with some fingering suggestions with commentary on source and performance.  I use it for the A Major Sonata K.331, and have found a couple of typos there already.

Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

probably still orders of magnitude better than those yellow cover schirmers. those are good for lining your bird cage with, that's about it.

But I'm looking for an highly edited one. I found the vn Burlow edition for Beethovens sonatas very useful, and ofc the Schabel too... Are there any similar to Mozart? Like, a famous Mozart pianist with his own edition...?

Check if there is an Alfred Masterwork edition.  When it comes to editing, I like the very clear separation between the composers marks and the editorial marks in their printing.

Great idea!  Would make a wonderful display for students.   8)
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Yes, there's little point in buying a Schirmer's edition, simply because many are supposedly out of copyright and are available on the IMSLP site for free.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

Avoid Schirmer's.  Peter's is Ok.  If you want just a selection of the most often played sonatas of both Mozart and Haydn go with the Alfred's "Sonata Album" edited by Maurice Hinson in two volumes.  Lots of editorial suggestions, clearly marked as editorial, some early and and middle famous Beethoven sonatas also included.
