What to charge?!
on: September 13, 2004, 09:05:23 PM
Here are the prices of teachers in my area.  $15/45, 35/1hr, $25/30, $30/30 $50/1 hr.  I am a college student pursuing a music major.  My add says $25/30 50/1 hr.  Is this too much?

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

It's really hard to say considering no one here knows your playing abilities, experience, etc.  I'm assuming you're a beginning teacher.  Where I live you would never get $30/half hour as a beginning teacher.  Rates vary so much for different areas though and even in the same area, as your quotes show.  It seems that $30/30 and $50/hour is the max, so I don't think I would go quite that high without a degree.  Compare your qualifications to those of the other teachers in your area and go from there.

The max meaning you probably have either a lot of concert and teaching experience, a D.M.A., or both.

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)
