Chickering 6' 3" grand piano 1876
on: January 28, 2012, 11:55:41 PM
Dear forum followers;
I have found a piano online I am interested in purchasing. The travel time to view the piano is four hours, which I am more than happy to do, but thought I would try to find out a little bit more about it first.
I took lessons years ago, as a child from age 3 to age 13, but have not really played regularly since. I am now looking for a grand piano that will inspire me to once again tickle the ivory, but one that is still reasonably priced.
I think I may have found it here:

For those who can't view the listing, it is a Chickering 6' 3" grand piano. Circa 1876. Ebony finish. Obviously popular overseas, I haven't actually seen very many of these pianos in Australia and have never had the chance to play one. An internet search tells me it is a well respected American brand out of Boston, and that pre-war production was a golden era for Chickering. Appraisals seem to put the value of these, in good condition, at around $4500.
Is anyone familiar with the model shown in the listing? The seller doesn't state the model, though seems to imply it may be a 109C. I'm not sure this is correct.
The seller cannot find the serial number. Can anyone direct me to where on the soundboard it is likely to be found?
Has anyone played one of these?
Sorry for the barrage of questions -- any information about this piano would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for reading.
