Listening to piano being tuned
on: February 02, 2012, 04:28:47 PM
A baby grand piano at a church I play fairly often is getting tuned. It's not my piano, and there's already going to be another person there apart from the tuner... but I was thinking of asking if I could watch and listen too. Would that be annoying for the tuner? I don't know if they like being left alone when then tune or not... It's not like I would ask him many questions if any at all, I just want to hear the notes being adjusted (and I've been thinking of learning how to tune pianos too).
You may have noticed that I'm not all there myself

I have sat silently in my piano room while the tech regulated, voiced, and tuned the piano.  Have done this with several techs and has never been a problem.  I'll wait till he/she is finished before I ask questions.

Just tell the tech you wish to silently observe.  Try not to hover though, give the person some space so they don't feel there is a hawk watching over their shoulder.

It would probably do you some good to read up on tuning before hand so you have an idea of what is happening.

This is a good book:

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Listening and watching is what got me hooked. I have 2 pianos and got them tuned 3-4 times per year each. Turns out, my tuner, 35 years as a tech, took me on for an apprenticeship (had to pay him of course) for 2 1/2 years and voila. I'm getting business. Part time for now, but who knows?
