3 movements from Petrouchka
on: February 02, 2012, 11:16:23 PM
I don't know the "3 movements from Petrouchka" (for the piano), but Petrouchka (the entire ballet music) would rank very highly amongst my favorite compositions of all time. I understand that Stravinsky considered "3 movements from Petrouchka" to be not just a transcription or arrangement of the ballet music or a "suite" of the ballet music for the piano, but then, what is it? Is it some kind of Fantasy based on certain themes found in Petrouchka? How much extra non-ballet-music-material is there? Also, did any pianist make a good recording of this piece? Thanks!
Other musical instrument: pipe organ

Maurizio Pollini did a brilliant recording of it.

Yuja Wang and Kissin has a really goos recording of it.

All three movements are in the actual play but the entire play isn't in the piano transcription.
