Pieces for beginners
on: February 05, 2012, 07:43:50 PM
Hello i have only been playing for a year and a half. I have had no formal training whatsoever and my skills are very limited. I managed to pick up scott joplin's entertainer up to a certain point, fur elise up to that beautiful run, the whole of Bach's Minuet in G and the first part of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's pathetique sonata. Can anyone give me a list of pieces to learn for beginners such as myself in ascending order of difficulty? you know, just to give me a bit of an initial boost.

Here is one idea for starters.  You can click on the "piano music" section of this website, and then click for the "complete list" and then click on the word "level", and you will have a list of every piece hosted on this site, sorted by approximate grade level.  Of course you will need gold membership to actually download the sheet music from this source.

That would work.  You could also have a look at one of the grade syllabuses from one of the examining bodies.  Some of them require you to purchase the information (which I don't recommend).  But here is one from Trinity that is free to download:

One more question. Is it too crazy for me to try to pick up Bartók's allegro barbaro? I am in love with the piece and I like to take leaps.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
