disliking some Beethoven's movements?
on: February 06, 2012, 10:15:49 PM
After exploring Beethoven's sonata i was determined to learn one, but unfortunely, in almost every sonata he wrote there has to at least be one movement that i dislike, for example, i never appreciated the third movement in his pathetique even though i really wanted to learn the other movement.

have anyone experienced the same thing?

Nope. What's wrong with you?  :P

Seriously, though.  There are certainly movements I have liked better than others in most of Beethoven's sonatas.  Interestingly, which ones has changed over time - one's that at first seemed less satisfying have often, on repeated playing or listening, come to be amongst my favourites.

The 3rd movement of the Pathetique is actually a lot of fun to play - give it a go, you may be surprised how much you come to like it.

I was working on Beethoven's Sonata op. 10 no. 2 for a while, but then I stopped because I found the third movement incredibly boring.

Not if it's played at speed. It's actually pretty exciting, and heaps of fun.  Practicing to get there (ie, much more slowly) I can see how you would think that, but I'd strongly suggest you persevere. You may get a very pleasant surprise.

There's a big difference between Beethovens Sonatas and some divertimenti even from Haydn.
All of B's Sonatas have a process over all mouvements. To like seperate movements is not the rigth question. every movement has a special task in the Sonata.  (in 10,2 it's a simplification process from a multithemed 1st movement to the monothemed 3rd).

the rigth guestion has to be: "Do you dislike some Sonatas".
my last favourite Sonata is 30,1. I don't know why - but it is.

I usually hate most 2nd movt of the sonatas because they usually are boring to my ears. The only piece with an exception is op 26 2nd mvt, which I think is a scherzo. It is easy to play but lively and always a pleasure to listen to. I prefer some fast, angry Beethoven. Beethoven is very good at composing fast pieces. My favourite movts tend to be 3rd mvts. I find they are the most lievely of the whole sonata. As I listen more to a sonata I tend to understand the sonata and find the 2nd mvt to be not as boring.
