What's Vivaldi's most lively piece besides For seasons?
on: February 07, 2012, 10:26:54 PM
Hey,

There's so much junk on youtube that it's irritating finding a decent Vivaldi piece of music that I haven't heard before. I'm looking for a lively concerto that's typical Vivaldi style if that makes sense.

Thanks!

Hello,

Vivaldi is so prolific that it's hard to know where to start suggesting other works besides the 4 Seasons, but if you really like Vivaldi, then that's good news as there's plenty of good works to go round.

One of my favorite collections of concertos are the 12 concertos of Opus 3.  Personally I enjoy these more than the 4 Seasons as every concerto is just as engaging as the next, especially RV 580 (Concerto for 4 violins) & 565:

Mvt. I of the latter, 565, contains one of the most unforgettable fugues in baroque repertoire I can think of and is a masterwork.

Although I wouldn't consider this as lively as his typical insturmental style, my favorite Vivaldi work has to be his Stabat Mater.

The harmony and progressions in the 1st movement, Dolorosa, are surprising, complex, and very beautiful.

Anyway, so there's a couple of works I know really well, but any Vivaldi you find other than 4 Seasons and those I mentioned should not dissappoint you; his unique style can be found in just about anything he wrote, so just keep exploring and you should come across plenty to appreciate.

Take Care
Haydn: Sonata in C No. 35
Scarlatti: K. 1, 380, 443
Blasco de Nebra: Sonata V
Handel: Fantasia in C G.60
Couperin: La Reville Matin
Rameau: La Dauphine
Pachelbel, Trabaci, Frescobaldi: Various

Also, I too got tired of the 4 Seasons because it's one of those overplayed works heard everywhere.  Then I came across this 1998 recording of Christopher Green's with a really insane harphsichord realization, take a listen:

You'd think that this was nearly a keyboard concerto they way it's played, but me being a keyboardist especially interested in continuo, it did re-spark my interest in the work for a time.

-Just an oddity I wanted to share since we're on the subject of Vivaldi.  ;)

Any idea where to get the score for that RV558? It's lovely and I wish to play it as a duet with my girlfriend!

Couldn't find it on the internet though  :-[

I meant for free. Vivaldi's been dead for hundreds of years... I don't need to support a publishing establishment with my hard-earned dollars. ;)

I couldn't find it for free; that's quite annoying, as I actually wanted a score myself as well! It's such exciting instrumentation...
It's a shame it's not on IMSLP. And it's not that rare to hear either...

I know! I've been reading about the theorbo and the chalumeau all morning it's simply fascinating!

I love Vivaldi. He is one of my favourite composers. I think everyone loves Vivaldi!

He pushed the very limits with his boisterous  energy, and composed some of the most joyful music we have in existence!  He also wrote some of the most hauntingly beautiful music in the entire world!

Vivaldi-showing us that is is indeed possible to be a popular star and a classical master at the same time!
