Question about progression and repertory
on: February 11, 2012, 03:00:25 PM
Dear all,

I have been playing the piano for four years now and yesterday I decided to make a list of all the pieces I have ever played. This list can be seen below. I was wondering how you think about my progression (I started when I was 17) and about the pieces I have played.

Are there any "essential" pieces missing, and what do you advise me to study next? Thanks for the advice!

Kind regards,

Steven

Holy cow that's quite a list!!!! I have been playing for a year and a half now and i only managed to pick up fur elise up to the beautiful run, the entertainer up to a part i cannot define here, the whole of the minuet in G by bach, a part of the 2nd movement of sonate pathetique by beethoven. I recently fell in love with the allegro barbaro and i am attempting to learn it. I see you have played it. My question is, is it too early for me to attempt it? Even if it is, should i drop it for now or should i at least try?

P.S.: Plz do not go too harsh on me. I have no access to formal training whatsoever. I live in a third world country called bangladesh and i do no even have a piano. Heck, i never even played a piano in my life. I play everything on a not-too-good-not-too-bad keyboard. I only recently found sources on the internet where i can find sheet music. I haven't yet learnt to sight-read but i practiced a lot with my own finger exercises. I learned scales and chords, and concepts such as key, chord-scale relationships, modes, parallel keys, ploychords, alteration, etc. by studying and experimenting. Technique wise, I can play a few scales and arpeggios quite fast and my dynamics are good(i.e., only as far as a beginner can get without weighted keys). I can improvise with simple walking bass and chords on the left hand and melodies on the right hand.

And finally, sorry for such a long post. Any other advice would be good too. Thanks in advance.
