Introduction to Beethoven sonatas.
on: February 13, 2012, 02:04:54 PM
Hey
My teacher has suggested that I learn a Beethoven sonata and im curious about where to start. I was thinking about the Op.10 No.1,Op 13 'Pathetique' and the Op 14 No.1. What do you guys think of these choices? Are any of them unwise or would they all be suitable??

Thanks
Chopin-Waltz Op.42
Brahms-Intermezzo Op.118 No.2
Field-Sonata No.1
Beethoven-Sonata Op.14 No.1
Bach-Prelude and Fugue in B flat No.21 WTC 1

op 10 no 1 is a great piece! highly reccommend it, mvmnt ii and iii are more difficult than mvmnt i and i highly reccommend learning the presto (iii) and ii mvmtns first and concurrently as those will end to take more time to season.

I've always had a particular fondness for the Pathetique, but any of the three should be OK.  Pick the one you like best and go for it.

One of my favourite early sonatas is the 6th in F Major -I just love the Presto 3rd movement -this movement is just so joyous.
When a search is in progress, something will be found.

I say start at the beginning: Op. 2, No. 1, although the 4th movement requires some chops.

Op. 2, No. 3 is also good, and loads of fun.
