here is my final version of Chopin nocturne op9-2
on: February 15, 2012, 03:22:02 PM
Hi folks,
I have finally fine tuned the microphone position for my recordings.
I've moved the mics 30cm away from base line, therefore I beleive this is eqvalent to what my ears have listened while playing.

At the same time, the pedaling noise has reduced too.
I retuned the rh's G note this morning as you can hear its very bright as my intention. :D

This is a pure high fidelity recording of my original sound as you can hear my breathing, my feet moving from pedal to pedal.

I hope you all like my interpretation of this nocturne.

Hi johnmar,

I enjoyed hearing your rendition of this nocturne.  You play it in a lyrical, dreamy way which befits this evening music.  I believe your articulation, dynamics, phrasing, fluidity, and making the melody soar above the accompaniment, etc. are all reflected in your musical intent.

There is only one suggestion I might make.  Regarding the pedaling, once in awhile when you pedal the left hand harmonic bass notes, you get a clipped rather than a resonant and sustained sound.  I believe what happens in those instances is that you simultaneously pedal AS you depress the note, and just as it starts to sound you change the pedal and lose the note.  In romantic music it's best to use syncopated pedaling.  That is, play the note and in the instant it is fully sounding, then catch it in the pedal AFTERWARD.  It'll always sound rich and resonant that way.  Most of the time you do exactly that.  As I say, there a just a few instances where you pedal with the bass note rather than play just a partial second after you sound the note.

I believe you have a fine rendition that is convincing.  Fine playing!

David

thansk Dave, when I play it, my tears comes out and I sing it mentally thru my heart where the  musical cells around. This morning I actually found the problem, I raise the pedal my 2 turns. And SQUEAK in my yamaha stool need to be retentioned by adding more pads.

Cheers

Nice! Personally this is one of the nocturnes I hate by Chopin but I had to listen to this one because everyone plays it and I wanted to see how well you can play it. You surprised me with the way the piece flows. Basically, what I want to say Rachfan had already said and couldn't be more clear. Just in the beginning I think most of the notes were right but some of the rhythm was wrong. But this is just what I hear with other recordings, merely comparing with yours. Don't listen to my observations!

Funny? How? How am I funny?

Piano play, thanks for your feed back. Well, I have to say everyone has the right to add notes or even more ornaments at their own rights since you are the original artist. I have heard many versions of this played by concert pianist that he added more improvisations to ALL chopin nocturnes. Sorry I could not remember his name, but he is from Australia. He palyed on ABC radio few months ago.

I very much enjoyed your heartfelt performance of this Nocturne. A performer's love and involvement of a work generally is reflected in the performance, which adds a wonderful validity and appreciation for the listener. Thanks so much for sharing.
