10 thousand hours.

Yup, according to research, to master a new skill, like playing the piano one needs to practice 10 thousand hours, which is equal to 3 hours a day over a ten year period. Sounds insane does it not, but they found that all masters put in that amount of work.
I think most on this forum have put in 30 thousand hours.

How many hours you think you've put in, be honest ;D

I had classmates in engineering school who spent their nights studying. As for myself the latest I spent studying was midnight and that was when I had lab reports to finish. Yet I had better grades than them.

I think it is not just the number of hours but how you practice, and I do think talent counts.

I am also going to demonstrate that you don't need to practice 10k hours to master a new skill. For example, I can be a master at being lazy: sit on the couch, turn on the TV and do nothing, and it didn't take me 10k hours to master it. There  :P

But to be serious, I don't think 3 hours a day is unrealistic especially once you reached an advanced level. It matters also how you spend these hours. After I stopped taking piano lessons when computers took the better of me, I was only practicing 30 mins a day maybe an hour at most. I was told if I wanted to keep going and really advance my skills I would need 2-3 hours a day.

Cheers,
CG

Maybe if I really feel like playing 3 hrs.
