The correct way to do a glissando?
on: February 16, 2012, 11:48:10 AM
I always try glisandi for fun. I tried many techniques and none seem to work. What is the correct way to perform a glissando ascending and descending?
The most success I had with an ascending glissando was using a 2 and 3. With a thumb it hurts my nails so much.

I always use the thumb, but this is the only satisfactory way because my piano has got a "hard" keyboard.
Generally, the correct way to play a glissando is one that does not hurt your fingers and sounds good.
Best regards, Dr

dr's right on. exception, the strange animal i posted on several weeks ago, the chromatic glissando (which thanks to some wonderful help i am finally begining to navigate with some easy but still needs work). in this case the method suggested to me with a palm down, fingers up out of the way and pointed in the direction you're moving the hand works best, RH for down the keybarod, LH for up. hard to explain but i have a recording going up soon of my shimomura where i hope to illustrate this better (since all the youtube videos seem hell bent of playing it wrong i.e. black note glissando not true chromatic gliss.)
