Question about repertoire for a college audition
on: February 17, 2012, 10:28:05 PM
Hello to anyone who might know, I have a question. I am looking into college auditions and have a repertoire question.  For the classical requirement, it states "One movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or an equivalent work"... I want to play Haydn's Arietta with Variations in A Major. First of all would this be considered equivalent? I noticed here on pianostreet.com it is given a level of 7 which is higher than some sonatas. Problem is a lot of different versions I have looked at have different numbers of variations and have the variations played in various orders... how can I be certain what I am playing is the appropriate, standardized version of the piece, if there is one? If for some reason I did not learn all of the variations that are out there would it still be okay to play it as long as I specify which variations I am playing? Or would that be like wanting to play an incomplete piece? I don't imagine that would make me look very good. I know I should contact the department but I figured some of you would know, as maybe there is a standardized protocol to these things. Anyhow, thanks in advance for the help.

when in doubt just ask them directly, i.e just call the music school and ask.  i can totally see a short set of variations subbing for a sonata movemetn, a longer set for an entire sonata (i fulfilled a graduation reqmnt with such a substitution in student senior recital some time sort of long ago). it will just depend on the school.  just make sure you pick a very good work with a variety of challenges and opportunity to showcase your musicality and technique.

I would call the school too, but I'm guessing, no, they want a SONATA

Heck, even if the college wants a "Sonata", just call them anyways to see if you can replace the requirement with something that suits you more. I've heard of many cases where schools have allowed this.
