Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1
on: February 20, 2012, 01:13:06 AM
Hello forum. I am in need of an actual copy of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no.1. When i go to, say, amazon, the only books they have are for four hands. The Second hands being the orchestra, and the first hands being the actual piano part. I was wondering if the actual piano part is the same, or a transcription, and should i get the one with two hands or the one with the piano and the orchestra?

to my knowledge there are some solos based on the main thematic material but no full solo transcription that i know of.

u will most likely need the standard piano i and piano ii version with solo and orchestra reduction for piano version if you want to learn it properly. if you just want a pretty piece that sounds like it any of the arranged solos should be fine.

There is a solo piano transcription of the whole work. I have it somewhere (*looks in vain*).

@ OP - The solo piano part in the 2 piano versions is the solo piano part, same as for the orchestral version, the second piano part is an orchestral reduction.  For actually playing it, the 2 piano part is, I think, better as there is less page turning. The full score is really only useful if you want to study up for playing with an orchestra, or just read along.

Uh, yeah. That's the correct sheet music. The first hand is the solo version, and the second hand (every other staff line) is the orchestra. You need to see what the orchestra is doing as well, why would you want to leave it out? A concerto is a two-part thing and you've been looking at the correct type of sheet music the whole time. Learning a concerto without the orchestra part in front of you in at least some part is a very crazy idea.
