Help! My 61 keys just frustrated me :@
on: February 21, 2012, 01:24:00 AM
Hello everyone, first of all, I'm new here! So yeh, hello  ::)

So, I want to make this a long story short. When I was 13 I started to take some piano courses. Well, it lasted for 2 years, then I stopped for some time to take a technical course for 1 and a half year. Now I started practicing again, and I bought a PSR E423 (61 keys), because I was unsure if I still liked keyboard. So I really got excited, and after being able to play a few pieces, I decided to move to this Castlevania SOTN piece, called The Lost Paintings. After practicing a whole lot, I came to the 3rd line of the sheet music only to find that I'd need 1 more octave to play this.

Yeh, I'm really frustrated and demotivated now. Is there a way to adapt this sheet music or should I just move along and play simple pieces until I get a keyboard with more octaves?

The sheet music is at ichigos.com (Please navigate to Castlevania Symphony of the Night and "Lost Paintings" by "TheWhiteRabbit", sorry the site won't let me post the direct link)

I have found that sometimes , depending on the piece , you can adjust the octave range of the keyboard to make it work out . If that doesnt work then so sorry.

Yes, your keyboard has a transpose setting that ranges from -12 to +12.  If you set this to -12, everything will play an octave lower.  Then you just slide your chair to the right a little bit and you are good to go.

I had a 61 key keyboard when I was a kid.  It's like playing the top manual of an organ or something.  It seems like you never use the notes on top and always run out of notes on the bottom.

Organ manuals, and most harpsichords, are 61 key keyboards.  Organ manuals have the same key spacing as pianos; most harpsichords are narrower.

And organs -- and many harpsichords -- have "4' " or "octave" stops which sound an octave higher than played.

Just ignore the octave jump symbols when reading...

Thanks everyone. I transposed to -12 and I am now playing this. Of course it doesn't sound like its supposed to be, but I guess it's ok.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
