american universities for piano
on: September 20, 2004, 02:55:58 AM
Does anybody here know of any universities in the western US that offer both a very solid piano performance program, as well as standard courses like Business, Science, English, etc.?  I want to continue my piano studies when I'm old enough to go to college, but I don't want to go to a conservatory, as they wouldn't offer training in other areas.

University of Washington, USC, UCLA and Stanford off the top of my head.

From what I've heard, Indiana University and Oberlin have the best non-conservatory music programs in the country. I know John Ogdon taught at Indiana.

Avoid Oberlin.

For solid music and scholarship, there is (of the top of my head), U. of Michigan, Yale, JHU/Peabody (good sciences there), Vanderbilt (Blair school), and Indiana. Note these are some of THE BEST music schools in the country, in case you're doubting. The Julliard-Columbia dual-enrollment is nothing like these, its greatly biased towards Julliard (of course!).

Perfect timing!  I logged on tonight to ask practically the exact same question as Liszmaninopin posted!  I am looking for a good cheap college with a strong business program as well as a good piano/music program.  Yale sounds great, but money is a finite commodity. ???  Any inexpensive alternatives?

San Francisco State University has a music program that also includes the programs you've mentioned.  It's not very expensive unless you are an out of state resident. We have a very good Business program and a Political Science program and is considered to be one of the best in those two areas of study.
