How many different ways can you play the C chord?
on: March 01, 2012, 07:32:56 AM
I am putting together a list of ways to play the C chord.
What ways other than blocking and arpeggiating, alberti bass, and waltz style, inversions
can you play it?
Perhaps specific voicings?
thanks

I think the answer is infinite once you consider various rhythms and articulations, too. Or are you just meaning different styles?

If you only want 3 notes (CEG) You have root position and 2 inversions, so that's 3 ways, but each of those you can play blocked or broken. Then you could have open voicing like C G in LH, E in RH. or E C in LH, G in RH, etc.

Then if you want more than just 3 notes, you can play 4-note chord blocked and broken and inversions, or with different notes doubled. Then you could play arpeggios one or multiple octaves, hands together or separate, and all those inversions.

It goes on and on especially if you want to add different rhythms and articulations!!

Only one way.... the way the composer intends in the score at hand.  Enough tom-foolery, now, off to practice you lot!

Weird answer, you're no fun! I think it's fun to think of how many ways.

Many people who think that way don't even know they are playing the C chord when they do it.
When all they do is play - 'the way the composer wrote it.'

And if you teach composition - what do you tell your students?

I meant different voicings - not rythms   -
though that would be interesting too.
I like to have the student see what they can do - and
not get them into the habit of only thinking of one way -
I think it's more fun too!
Also think it's so much more easier to read the music when
a beginner becomes aware the notes can be on other lines.

Just major 5 finger patterns and minor 5 finger patterns can be pretty songs
when you change rythms. (To an extent, of course)

I don't think we are talking about composition, but if we were I'd tell my students precisely what they need to hear.... much like what I told you lot, with one slight variant:

"Of to compose, you lot!"

Open, closed voicings. All the different voicings, yes, varying notes between hands.

You could go for something Romantic.  C........      E.......        G.......    Or roll the chords like that.  Or keep playing the notes of the C Major chord over the course of a few minutes.  Was that Wagner?

Then there are all the different ways to notate it.  All the clefs.  Having it transposed.  Using double sharps/flats.

I've thought up a couple ways.

You could even make it a game with your student.  How many ways can you play the C chord.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I think you have just made a quantum leap from the boring ceg blocked chord -
Thanks Quantum!
Making it a game is a great idea - and kind of what I had in mind -
I think it really opens up the piano to students when they see
all the different voices and ways they can play a chord.

What the hell does it mean when you say "not many people who play that way even know that they are playing a C Major Chord?"

I daresay hardly a fractal of you have the slightest clue what a score even means and how to read it.

Maybe the OP is composing and wants to consider all possible options.  ;)

We need a math wiz for this. You'd have to consider all possible note combinations. Some won't be very practical though (E1,G3,C5 probably won't sound too good). For a basic chord with no rhythmic variations, the number isn't infinite, but pretty large.

Nice to see a friendly face!
:)
Yes - I am composing - and like to think outside the little box, which I believe most people do.
