A bit confused....Hungarian Dance no 5?
on: March 10, 2012, 07:52:43 PM
So I have a book of classic piano pieces, and in it is Brahms' Hungarian Dance no 5.  But when I look it up online (youtube) I keep finding a piece that is not the same as what I have.  So...is there more than one piece by this title?  And also sometimes people say things like "Hungarian Dance no 5, the hard one"...so there is a "hard" and an easier one?  I feel dumb asking this but I'm confused.

Lastly, I am currently Royal Conservatory level 8, do think this piece is manageable for me?  I love it so much!

Thanks for your help :)

If you're talking about the big 340 page book of Piano classics by Amsco Publishing - Yes, the Hungarian Dance in there is a very simplified version.

Their version is in a minor, and the original is in f# minor and the LH is usually a very difficult vamping section.

Check out the original arranged for Piano solo (Page 81 (17) )

yes, that is the book I have.  So is there a such thing as a more complicated one in a minor?  I still don't get it.  They completely changed the piece to put in in their book?

Not that I know of... It's either the simplified in a minor (in that book) or the original in f# minor.

Hungarian... rhapsody?

Brahms Hungarian Dance no. 5 goes like this:

Although this one's in g minor.
Original for 4 hands: F# minor
2 hands transcribed by Brahms: F# minor
For orchestra: g minor
For violin (difficult version): g minor
For violin (simplified version in a book I have): a minor.

That's all I'm aware of..

does that answer your question?
Ravel Jeux D'eau
Brahms 118/2
Liszt Concerto 1
Rachmaninoff/Kreisler Liebesleid
