college audition repertoire
on: March 14, 2012, 02:22:30 PM
Hi guys!

I really need some opinions for my audition :) which will be in about 10 weeks!

And I'm preparing these -

Bach BWV 875
Mozart K570
Rachmaninoff op. 23 no. 5
Gershwin The Man I Love
Chopin op. 10 no. 9

My friend said I had a rather weak choice for the 20th century piece as it was too tonal (and easy). He said most applicants will choose from Ligeti/Kurtag etc. He also suggested Messiaen, but I really have a problem playing atonal pieces from memory. If I have to do something other than Gershwin, would Stravinsky's Tango be a good choice? How about Poulenc's Intermezzo?

Hey what's up!  I'm preparing my audition too!  Except mine is more in like 10 months?  lol

I'm playing something atonal for my 20th century piece, but my teacher suggested Prokofiev Tocatta or the Prokofiev Sonata 3!

But considering the fact that you only have 10 weeks, I would suggest the Tocatta because it's shorter.

Live large, die large.  Leave a giant coffin.

How long a piece do you need?  Can any impressionalist piece be your consideration?

Thanks for your advice :) But I guess it's rather impossible for me to finish his toccata in 2 months  :-[ I'm now thinking of another work of his... Do you think op. 75 no. 6 would be a good choice?

It's said that "the complete program should be about 20 minutes in length", and NO, as "A composition by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt (or similar romantic) or impressionist composer" is one of the requirements... so I guess it would be an equivalent choice to the Rachmaninov's prelude
