Buying a digital piano online?
on: March 26, 2012, 05:03:34 PM
Have any of you ever bought a digital piano online?
If so, what website?
And did you try it out in a store first?
Overall, is it bad to purchase a digital piano from the internet?
Opinions appreciated. I tend to buy mostly everything online (including all my guitars). I'm wondering if I should be more weary in the piano market.

Yep, second hand, off ebay $300. I recommend a weighted key stage piano, then use one of your guitar amps. Pick it up in person and you can test if it works. New DPs loose a small fortune, so my advice is to buy one used, then sell it on for what you paid if you need to upgrade. 88 keys, weighted and Midi out is the minimum spec. I would consider.

As long as you test out the exact same model in person before you make a decision.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I bought my first digital piano (Yamaha P80) online back in 2001. Also bought my subsequent piano (Kawai MP8) online at Kraft Music. Good way to go in my opinion. The big online retailer are pretty quick and have a good reputation. Also they compete aggressively on price.
One thing to be aware of is that the big piano makers (Kawai, Yamaha, Roland) do not allow online retailers to sell their console pianos, only stage (slab-style) pianos. Not a problem for me as I was interested in a slab, but if you want something with cabinetry that looks like an acoustic you typically have to go to a brick and mortar shop. And be sure to negotiate because their sticker prices are almost always way inflated.
