new video Chopin "waterfall" op10-1
on: March 27, 2012, 02:24:56 PM
Folks, just did this etude today at 11pm.

After watching Wolfi's video, he encouraged me to redo this etude. I spent 2 weeks on my new metronome -KorgTm40.

Sorry about my weired facial expressions ::) my wife laughed badly that I should not laugh at lang lang, because I am no worse.

Welcome all feedbacks..

Thanks

You started off a bit ropily -but mostly you played the notes very well -lovely light touch -

There is something about the rising and falling effect in this study which needs to be very clearly articulated -some pianists do this with very subtle tempo changes -some with dynamics or both -I think you are capable of playing this study with a little more finesse still -

You are way ahead of me though, it has to be said|!

This needs some more work, of course. I'd try to practice mainly slowly and relaxed, and *very cantabile*! And try not to go faster on the metronome scale than up to a tempo where you can play *every single note* evenly without any effort. In this case it might be around quarter note=60-80, not more. Of course you can always do some "speed tests" but they must not take over the whole practice, only perhaps like 5% of it. Be sure not to skip the slow practice phase, rather enjoy it!! You will anyway need to do it again, also after many years. I'd be completely lost without my daily slow practice runs of this etude. Actually only writing about it makes me wanty to go to the piano and do some 10 careful repeats at quarter note= 80  8)

I notice that you are doing some good wrist movements, keep those, but don't cheat so much, and really try to play a *cantabile legato*! And care for every note and it's meaning within the context of the whole piece!

Perhaps you might consider a higher seating position, your's seems a bit low to me.

Johnmar78,  lots of hard work :); I agreed with what have said by others, a slow practice is a must so as articulate every single notes. Perhaps in the next few weeks you will fix up these issues.
Anyway, good work, keep polishing....

Hi johnmar,

Good progress on this very difficult etude.  I believe that wofli gives very practical and good advice--that is, slow practice playing every note cantabile within your true speed limit that allows for complete accuracy in your articulation.  Don't increase the metronome until you achieve that.  If you play fast prematurely, there will be errors and then you must spend very considerable time in repetitions undoing those errors, which hands you a setback rather than more progress.

This is fairly inline with what I've been doing - In its entirety I play it around 80-90 at the moment, Many 2 or 4 bar sections I can play up to 152, others that I can't I work on in isolation very small sections at a time, amongst the constant repeats of the piece as a whole much slower.

@wolfi - interesting what you said in the other thread about 35-36 - thats the pattern on A major yeh? I don't find that one troublesome much..  the decending B7 one is my other troublesome spot - D#BAB etc.

thanks guys, your feed back is a big bonus. I liked the most serious critics, the worst the better. I wont take it heart or personal like some people do. ;)
Musical expresiion that i s what I aimed for now, let the tempo go'

. I now, use metronome and working on my music instead of tempo.  The only place I cheated, was repeat of the main theme that I struck C with aid of my whrist and towards the final bflat chord. Other places perhaps LH, I was being lazy just let it flop and drop on the keys. or put this way, I slide ;D.

Ok,hopefully in few weeks time I come up with full of musical expression version. Thanks Agian.
