Your favorite sounds...
on: September 23, 2004, 09:15:26 AM
What are some of your favorite sounds?

Here are a few of mine...

I love the sound of being under water.  When given the opportunity, I will spend hours in the water (preferably snorkling) and as much of that time under it listening to whatever I can hear.  It's beautiful!

I am also a big fan of being in a very large room hearing a very large group of people chatting, where the energy is extremely positive.

Another one... I am a sucker for the sound of a truly isolated forest where one must backpack into for miles to enjoy.

How about you?

Water on rock, e.g.: waves crushing, rocky mountain rivers, tea garden’s water stones. But I must say that the visual and tactile elements are as important as the auditory ones.

Cooking noises: sizzling steaks, bubbling stews, crackling fish skin under the grill. Again, visual, taste and olfactory counterparts are just as important.

The human voice: children’s laughter and whispers in general. And of course singing and chanting.

The noises of the tea ceremony.

The noises that can be heard on a moonlit Japanese temple stone garden, if you sit really quiet.

Music.
The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)

and whispers in general.

I detest the sound of whispers especially back in the old high school era of mine where the teacher would teach but 2 kids in the back wouldn't shut the fruit up even if it costed them their life.

Maybe this should be in the other thread...   :-/

a crackling fire

cello

many a bird song... especially one from which type of bird I havn't taken the time to learn the name of, but it makes a noise like "bee bee boo boo" ... 4 even rhythmic values, the first two on the same pitch, and the second two a m3 down and both on the same pitch.

I love thunderstorms- all the phases, like gentle rain, heavy rain, the powerful thunder, thunder far away- rumbling on a low note.  I cant help but wonder how many music compositions were inspired by thunder..

Remember when you open up those hydralic doors that open upwards, then you get past them and they close downwards after you get through them?  They make that hydralic compression sound that sounds so cool!

I'm with Spatula on the dry leaves. I love to take a thoroughly dry leaf into my hand and gently and only partly close my hand over and over, hearing the rustle until I clap my hand shut, and then rub the leaf with my hands, watching the organic confetti fall...

I also love the sound of a scoop in cous-cous, or a large bag of beans spilling on the floor.

If one listens very intently, he can hear the latch in a lock when unlocking something, which is another beautiful noise.

I love the sound of subdued snips and clicks, like small, small fairies with glass shoes dancing on hard wood while opening and closing tiny scissors.

I love soft angelic whimpers that are rounded and cylindrical in shape, without the sharp edges along the bases.

I love the sounds that occur behind you and make you conscious of the area between the base of your head and the top of your neck.

I love sounds that fill the puzzled void inside my chest and throat and make me feel high tide rising inside of those areas. I love it when that feeling makes me emit a noise.

And I always love the sound of that noise...

Somehow, I just remember on my holidays when I came across these really nice windchimes.  They werent the super cheap ones youusually find, but were all cut such that they were all in tune.  You could buy Eb major, C major, A major...

After just having spent a little time outside hearing the sound of my neighbor's fountain, I have to add to this thread my own love of the sound of water.  I do love water, water, water.  Rivers, waterfalls, fountains (though, that always has a feeling of man-madeness to me), the ocean, the rain.  What is so soothing and/or envigorating about these sounds ?

I don't know exactly, but I can nevertheless identify with what you write about here - and, for that matter, Liszt's Les Jeux d'Eaux à la Villa d'Este and the Ravel Jeux d'Eau /i] that arguably sprayed out therefrom aren't so bad either!...

I am a water lover myself, but the Feng Shui home fountain i purchased did not last very long as it just irritated the hell out of me. As you say, fountains have a manmade feel to them which somehow diminishes the sheer elemental natural force of water.

I feel more at home on the water than i do on land and never miss an opportunity to be as sea, however short the journey. The smell of the sea air & the gentle swell (sometimes) gives me a feeling of contentment.

Strangly though, I always find myself humming Ma Vlast.

A loud and mighty burp is always a joyous and exciting moment, especially from a pretty girl because it's unexpected.  That calls for a high 5, "good form!".

Which makes me think of another fun noise - a solid high 5.  Once, I had a 10/10 high5, it was heard clear as a bell across a loud, crowded room...  It was a proud occassion!  What's so good about a high 5 is that it's a collaborative effort.  The victory belongs to everyone.

Another fun noise is when some huge, burly fellow lets loose a little mousy sneeze!  I laugh harder because he could break me like a twig ;D

It's unfortunate for anyone who thinks such delights are to be grown out of.

The sound of rain along with wind blowing. Or if it's really windy, yeah the wind. But what I really like is the sound of silence. The kind of silence where you could actually hear you thoughts as if it a person were next to you.

Thanks for mentioning those pieces !  I just came back from one of the most beautiful parks, which has a natural creek running through it.  I was just entranced as I walked along and the sound of the water on the rocks absolutely permeated my ears !  It's haunting !  Anyway, I started thinking about composing that sound in music, and then wondering about composers whom have already done this -- of course, Liszt came to mind as a possible candidate though I had completely forgotten about a piece that I have even had in my own repertoire -- Au lac de Wallenstadt.

hee hee ... I was just thinking about this little fountain that was given to us as a wedding present.  I like the idea of having running, babbling water in the house, but it didn't last too long for us, either.  Also, aside from the sound of the water, I could hear the blasted motor almost as loudly !  That is just asinine !

I have always kind of marvelled at people who have long bouts at sea, especially the individuals who go it alone.  I absolutely love being in the water and I always have, and I love being by the water.  I had the opportunity one summer to be a camp counselor at a resident camp for girls on a little island in Canada.  One of our out trips was 3 days on a sail boat in the Sound.  I had never done anything quite like that before, but it sure was beautiful.

There once was a young man from Sparta
Who, they say, was a very good farta.
He could fart anything from "God Save the Queen"
To Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."

First, comes a neat pizzicato,
Followed by a prolonged obbligato.
And, then with a crash, comes Bach's "B minor Mass"
And, in counterpoint, "La Traviata."

And wonderful it is, too! (although Thal's probably wondering how I can possibly extol its virtues while on the other hand praising some of the music of your compatriot Elliott Carter, but then that's an issue for Thal to work out for himself if he can be bothered so to do - which he probably can't)...

I have always kind of marvelled at people who have long bouts at sea, especially the individuals who go it alone.
Whitman's "sailors and mates" and Vaughan Williams's choral-and-orchestral Sea Symphony (the first of his nine symphonies and a fine enough work while being less than his best) come to mind; I can't equate to the nautical life as such but the sound of water on land is quite another matter...

I absolutely love being in the water and I always have, and I love being by the water.
I don't feel anything for the first but can certainly identify with the second of these.

I had the opportunity one summer to be a camp counselor at a resident camp for girls on a little island in Canada.  One of our out trips was 3 days on a sail boat in the Sound.  I had never done anything quite like that before, but it sure was beautiful.
I'm quite sure that you achieved something during that experience that I could never have done.

It sounds OK; it's just what usually happens after the pouring has ended that I find so unpalatable, but then as that doesn't involve much in the way of sound, I suppose that even mentioning it might put me in danger of going off topic...

Silence

Water in general, i.e. waterfalls, fountains, ocean, streams ....

The contented, secure breathing of a sleeping baby

The purring of a cat

Thunderstorms

The trains running through my neighborhood at night

The thunderous cheers of tens of thousands of people at a football game

That split second of awestruck silence right before an audience bursts into applause
