Aching wrist
on: March 31, 2012, 09:00:42 AM
Dear All,

Recently I have twisted my wrist whilst playing tenis. Even though I am able to move it, it hurts every time. So my question is, should I be playing piano for 4 hours a day as usual? HAs something like this ever happened to you? What would/did you do?

Thanks!

Hi randompianists,

I actually just got over this. About 6 months ago I hurt my wrist working out. It was so bad that it hurt to try and hold a can of soda in that hand.

I literly spent the next 5 months rehabilitating it before I could start playing piano seriously again.

I tried to continue to play after a month or so of it happening, and while it hurt I could spend about 10 to 15 mintues at the piano.

Then I got smart and only played with my other hand.

So my advice is, if you have any kind of discomfort in your wrists from some type of injury, immediatly stop and give it the time it needs to heal.

The tendons in your wrists / hand take a really long time to heal and if you keep messing with it, it will just take longer to heal.

So I would play with the other hand until there is no more discomfort in your injured wrist. I know it's really hard to do, as we love piano so much. But you have to look long term.

Also, make sure you go see a doctor regarding your wrist. He will give you a set of exercises you can do (stretches) that will help promote the healing process.
Hope this helps.

This is an excerpt from the taubman site.  I had an exchange with Ajspiano about these dvds and he highly recommends them and I respect him a lot as a piano instructor. This might help you and others:

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
