Repertoire for college audition confusion...
on: April 09, 2012, 06:21:57 AM
I was wondering what the college I want to go to means by "Any large keyboard work of Brahms, Chopin, Liszt or Schumann"
also i'm going to play Bach's wtc in c minor and Beethoven's op 10 no 1(just starting it) sonata (are those appropriate?) but the 20th Century Composition I have no idea...can anyone make any suggestions?
I will be entering the audition in about one year from now.

Maybe they are referring to:
Brahms: Pagannini Variations, Piano Sonatas,
Liszt: Piano Sonata, Mephisto Waltz
Schumann: Carnival, Piano Sonatas.
However these are extrememly difficult work. It's unlikely that a college applicant can play them well.

smells to me like they're just wanting to make sure you don't put a short less developed (form wise, length wise etc) piece in for what should be the meaty part of the audition. i.e. don't come in with a 4 minute intermezzo and expect it to have the same weight as chopin scherzo.
so a brahms could be say one of the rhapsodies (for an audition if you have the chops or it, the b minor of op 79 i.e no 1 is probably better than the easier g minor of no 2, note to anyone that gets their panties in a knot over the comment, i didn't say g minor no 2 is easy, just it is less difficult to pull of than the b minor).
or a chopin scherzo or ballade, or longer liszt (i do not reccommend it, the easier they are techncially the harder and deepr his music tends to be, it's almost easier to just practice and drill you but off on a showy piece vs crash and burn in interpretting something from his later years, i'd just avoid it all together, wait till your accepted then work on it with your prof).
schumann....zzz.... what was i talking about again?
oh that's right 20th century, usually they're probably going to want to hear something post-romantic, really something impressionistic or even on the verge of atonal to full blown serialism is probably fine. i'd just stick to a standard like a debussy prelude

Ah well I was thinking about Berceuse Op 57 by Chopin (such a lovely piece) but now that I'm looking at the rhapsodies by Brahms I'm now indecisive as to what to learn for the summer for the audition

lol just having some fun, as i've stated before i don't not have an appreciation for his conctribution to the repertoire or his artistry just for me i have yet to have any kind of emotional response to his piano music both as a listener or performer (i.e. i hcan't get jazzed about learning anything of his yet) but occassionally my mood swings around and i'll like him a bit more, i.e.
i actually sometimes enjoy op 18

At my school, at least, a larger work by one of the Romantic composer could be anything from Liszt's Liebestraum to the Heroic Polonaise. For my audition, I played Italian Concerto 1st Movement Bach, Brahms Rhapsodie in G Minor and Chopin Scherzo No. 2. Hope this helps!
