Technical Piano Hammer question (felt)
on: April 10, 2012, 05:43:31 PM
I am a textile student doing a senior project utilizing alpaca fiber. This fiber is quite amazing if you study it, it's properties out preform wool on virtually every aspect (vastly stronger, more resilient, ect)and is superior to cashmere on many as well. I am trying to determine the feasibility of incorporating the fiber into hammer felt's. Figured it would be beneficial to go to the enthusiasts/professionals with this question first.
1. What determines the quality of hammer felt? (ex -weave structure, fiber diameter, fiber type)
2. What properties of the felt fiber are most desirable?
3. Are hammer felts made of anything besides wool? why?
4. How are hammer felts tested? (to prove superiority)
Thank you for your help.

You should adress your questions to a piano hammer manufacturer:
