Page turning?
on: April 11, 2012, 05:24:49 PM
Just wondering, has anyone ever used a tablet and some kind of device (foot pedal?) for page turning (BlueTooth, etc.)?

I always have issues with page turning... if the page ends at the end of a section, then fine. But if the page ends in the middle of a section, then you have to turn the page really fast, or hope that the left hand gets freed for a short amount of time and use that hand for turning. Or, I make an accordion kind of sheet music (all pages taped together) that is barely suitable for more than 4 pages wide, especially if the music rest is too short.

Another way is to rearrange the sheet music (on a PC or the old fashioned way with scissors and tape) so that page turning occurs at appropriate times where a pause can be made.

I have an Android tablet so maybe I could use it for page turning. Even a one or two finger swipe would be faster than having to grab the corner of page and turn it...

What do you say?

Another relatively low-tech method is to photocopy the pages with the awkward turns and lay them alongside the music rest.  This would not work of course if you are playing a long work.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

I use my iPad at times using the FourScore app.  It works pretty well, but sometimes turns the page the wrong way!  i.e. instead of the next page it goes to the previous, rather annoying.  But since it's just while practicing, I don't mind.

I've not seen a foot pedal to go with it, would be nice to have.

Bach: French Suite #5 in G,
Chopin: Andante Spianato,
Chopin: Nocturne F#m, Op 15 #2

I've seen someone use a foot pedal with an iPad and special software to do the job.  Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the device.

Hmm... this might be it:

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Right, I saw this one a while ago. I need an Android software for this... I don't want to shell out $300 more for an IPad...  ???

My dream music rest would be a 8.5" by 11" touch screen with stylus to annotate and foot pedal.

I'll stick to paper for now  :P

Me to I can never flip the page while playing.

Even cooler would be a device that is programmed to know the music and listen while you play, thereby turning pages for you without a button or pedal. It might only work when playing from beginning to end (relatively accurately); even so, it would be awesome.

Even cooler would be to know the music ourselves - if they can program the player piano - why can't we do that with our brains???

:)

However, I am not saying that the device wouldn't be handy for me.

Yes, that would be very awesome, but I don't think it's close to being possible. On the other hand, my idea is not so far-fetched. My phone listens to me talk and types the words for me. Could it not recognize a series of pitches on the piano and switch screens on cue? I was not being facetious . . . I have wondered about this possibility.

I generally just turn pages by hand, and I've gotten used to it. Or do you mean in competition?

fleet,

If a phone can do that - then - maybe you are onto something.
Seriously.
That would be great - as long as we still get to play it - and not a player piano :)
