Chopin's Nocturne op 20 speed
on: April 13, 2012, 12:47:39 PM
I read in another post that Chopin's pieces sometimes don't follow the metronome, but could you tell me at which pace does the metronome should be in Nocturne op 20 sharp C minor?

The piano sheet says it is Lento with Expression.

I have problems with the first 4 bars, I know that in bar 2 and 4 is a rest of 2, I have tried to follow the indications of the piano sheet, but I still have problems with not following the rythym.

Could you give me some advice as well as the metronome pace and whose interpretation I can listen please?

I think you mean No 20, rather than Op 20.

You can listen to Ashkenazy's interpretion; you can't go wrong with it:

By the way, in case you do not already know, there are two versions to this lovely nocturne.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

I think you need to set the tempo based on how you feel the following bars (the main theme) are to be played.  Do that, and then apply it to the first bars, which are basically an introduction.

Thanks for your points of view.  There is also I forgot to comment.  There is a little difference in the score I have in bar 7.

In bar 7 there isn't another C7 note in my score.  However, I checked there is another score (the original, I suppose) where the second C7 note appears.

Is the score I have wrong?
