Impressionist Repertoire
on: April 15, 2012, 09:43:26 PM
Hello.I have a concert in a month but I don't know what songs to play.I didn't want play ease songs and I researched some songs but I found it very difficult. My piano teacher said Erik Satie can be considered as Impressionist but his style is very different from Debussy. And I not found any De Falla and Resphigi piano piece it was impressionistic. So far, this my repertoire:
Debussy-Images Oubliées and Estampes
Ravel-Má Mére L'Oye and Le Gibet
Satie-Six Gnossienes
I want suggestions that could increase or improve the repertoire.

i've read in multiple sources griffes being grouped in with the impressionist composers (also some others i'll not mention since i don't entirely agree and i need more sources...), still , he was reported to have been strongly influenced by debussy, i can hear that in this work especially.
might want to explore this one, i rather like it,
a nice short one

You can't too much more impressionist than that list your wrote, but here are a couple others you might want to try for a future concert
Delius and Griffes. Another good one is Faure

I'm not sure how difficult they are (though they do sound pretty daunting at times) but some selections from Granados' "Goyescas" sound great; i'm sure him (along with his spanish contemporary Albeniz) were considered impressionists...someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think a piece by him would be great to add to your repertoire!

If your interested in impressionist music, than you might like some of Cyril Scott's piano music.

Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote some very beautiful and atmospheric pieces, somewhat influenced by Debussy, early in his career. Not sure whether sheet music would be easy to get hold of, mind you.
I got hold of one of those Naxos recordings of some of these some years ago, played by one Jordi Maso, and it is a favourite. Castelnuovo-Tedesco actually belongs in a thread of composers who wrote a lot of good stuff but ended up being known for only one composition (in his case, a superlative guitar concerto).
