Is this recording sloppy?
on: April 19, 2012, 03:14:10 PM

So basically I hear a fellow Youtuber, who also claims to be an experienced performer, criticize this performance as sloppy, on the grounds that it is plainly full of misplaced notes.

Now, I'm quite sure he is wrong, because I find none or very little (if ever) of these alleged wrong notes.

So, I have posted this to ask your opinions on the matter, if you agree or not to his assertion, and why.

Happy listening.  :)

Holy sh*t...I'm really impressed.  This is godly playing, sloppy or not.

I've heard the name Art Tatum but I never heard his playing until now.  The recording is absolutely amazing without even considering the recording technology at the time.  You'll be surprised at what people can do to alter recordings nowadays...

Unfortunately I can't really make a comment whether his playing is sloppy or not because I'm not familiar with the norms of this kind of music.

Thank you for your comment. I would also like to hear from particularly the people here who know a sufficient knowledge on stride/bepop as well as proper classical performance.

I know very little about that style of music but my initial impression is there is no reason to be so obssessed with alleged inaccuracies, as we are with classical music (not that I could detect any).
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

I know that, but the thing is it's claimed to be not just imperfect, but literally a sloppy performance; "lots of misplaced notes", that they are painfully obvious.
