Oh dear.

While there are many 'serious' contemporary composers whom I can appreciate for what they are (Coriliagno, Reich, the other minimalist guy) and some that I can't (Daugherty), I find that in general modern composers don't write on the scale of the Mahlers of the past - most things are either short, or fractured, or disillusioned, or just plain minimalist. Look at the Ligeti etudes - they are brilliant but short and bizzare, like individual thoughts. Postmodern poems. Or Coriliagno's symphony #1 - a very large, very moving piece, but it doesn't have the essential sypmhonic structure, the phrase that spans the whole piece, that stands out in an obvious way as in, say, Beethoven's 5th or Mahler's 2nd. That's what I need - structure, classical phrasing. Now everything is either disillusioned or apathetic, it seems. (..my $0.02).

So, what do I like? Paul Schoenfeld's 'Cafe Music' - it's a jazz/swing piece for classical piano trio ensemble in a three-movement form, written in '80-something, a virtuosic masterpiece.

At The Gates? Lol...

Shawn Lane, Pat Metheny and Allan Holdsworth on guitar.

U Shrinivas, Zakir Hussain and L Shankar for Indian music.

Micheal Brecker on Sax.

For composers, I really liked the Rzewskit works. I want to hear some Rautavaara. I can't really say I get Ligeti yet.

Lutoslawski (1913-1994)! Does he count...or does the person have to have been born or started writing music after 1960. His cello concerto is my favorite (as far as cello concertos go) and I also enjoy his string quartet and piano concerto. I would reccomend you all go listen to the cello concerto....it will change...well...nothing....but it's pretty amazing.

I will second that. Arvo Part is just amazing. It is a shame that he wrote so little for piano though. Teh only pieces I came accross for solo piano are "Fur Alina" and "Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka"

(there is also a Partita he composed before his tintinnabulation period). Is there any more?

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I haven't heard his solo piano stuff. My favourite work of his is probably "Fratres" for violin and piano. Listen to Gideon Kramer and Keith Jarrett's recording of it, it's simply breathtaking. Ten minutes of pure beauty... Planning to play it with a violinist friend actually, that will be fun.

There's an album, on Naxos I think, called "Tabula rasa". Check it out.

Yes, I have several CDs of him. Have you heard the Fratres version for string and percussion? I find it to be a quite sinister piece in that version.

Another amazingly beautiful piece for violin and piano is Spiegel im Spiegel.

And of course his work for choir (which seems to be the majority of what he writes) is breathtaking.

Best wishes
Bernhard.

As for high brow piano music...anyone ever heard of Ivan Karabyts? From the Ukraine?  I enjoyed playing a couple of his preludes last year.  Very interesting.

No, I haven't heard the pieces/versions you mentioned unfortenately. Found a naxos CD recently with about 10 different versions of Fratres, didn't buy it but it seemed to be interresting. Have to check out the piano/violin piece you mentioned, because I really love Fratres :)

There is an amazing CD (just launched): “Arvo Part – Alina” (ECM New Series) that has only these two pieces (Fur alina and Spiegel im Spiegel). It goes like that:

Spiegel im Spiegel (violin & piano)
Fur Alina (piano)
Spiegel im Spiegel (cello & piano)
Fur Alina (piano)
Spiegel im Spiegel (violin and piano)

Each time they are played ever so slightly different.

oh i love Fur Alina- it was one of the pieces cos the core dance at the Prix de Lausanne this year and my sister's friend did it and she danced it so beautifully, and i loved the piece and then realised i had it on cd at home! it's probably one of the very few incredibly slow pieces that i really really love.
