Favourite Piano Films
on: May 02, 2012, 06:03:29 PM
Hi,

Does anyone know any good films about pianists or any films that feature music as a prominent theme?

Natalya
Bach:Prelude & Fugue in G minor, No.16
Schoenberg:Six Little Pieces
Beethoven:Piano Concerto No.5
It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful.

The Legend of 1900 is my top fav. I think it's such a powerful story.. I also really like and recommend The Pianist. There is some really good history in it as well.

Amadeus is amazing, and it's currently on Netflix.

Another great (if overly silly) one is Impromptu. Also on Netflix, it focuses on George Sand's first encounters with Chopin, fictionalized of course. Some might not like it (it does drag on a bit) but I find it hilarious xD

Also, In Search of Beethoven is a good documentary about Beethoven's life. Features a lot of his music. Actually introduced me to some works I'd never heard before.
Currently learning -

- Bach: P&F in F Minor (WTC 2)
- Chopin: Etude, Op. 25, No. 5
- Beethoven: Sonata, Op. 31, No. 3
- Scriabin: Two Poems, Op. 32
- Debussy: Prelude Bk II No. 3

Just be careful when watching Amadeus. Don't take the movie too serious, not everything is true in the movie (especially the Mozart and Salieri rivalry). But it was true that Mozart had an annoying/weird laugh or sense of humor..you can also see it in his works. :P

Two films about choral music:
Så som i himmelen. I don't know the title in English, in Spanish "tierra de ángeles". Excellent Swedish movie.

Les choristes. Very good French movie

the legend of 1900

Man, I remember this one so well! The most exciting part was the duelling scene, it was so entertaining and humorous.  :)

Great thread since I'm not really into movies. I've only watched The Pianist so far and thought it was astoundingly beautiful. I'm gonne watch The Legend of 1900 this evening - it's uploaded on YouTube:

Recently saw a German film in TV called Vier Minuten (4 minutes). If you like more serious films (violence included) this would be interesting. It's about a woman in prison and her old piano teacher preparing for a competition.

Surprised nobody's mentioned "Chopin: Desire For Love"

Just trolling.

Worst bio-pic ever; literally taints Chopin's legend.

Yesterday I watched "Nannerl, Mozart's Sister".
Slow and intimate, but interesting film.

And I really liked "Chico & Rita", a superb animation film. About a latin jazz pianist and a singer, with a romance between them.

If you're into watching anime, there's this great tv series called "Nodame Cantabile", which follows a group of students through music school, with great focus on two piano players.

Also, there's an exclusively piano-themed anime film named "Piano No Mori", which was quite touching as well.
