New to classical music
on: May 09, 2012, 08:47:53 AM
Hey there, how's it going?
I'm new to classical, and I'm loving it, so I'm planning on staying on this realm for long.

I've been listening to some Chopin, Satie, and some Beethoven, but I'm still barely scratching the surface. What I wanted to ask of someone is if they could please recommend me something by the likes of Gymnopedie no.1 by Erick Satie, that soothing, calm, paused, ambient style, are there any other pianists that play in this style?

Also, I've been listening to Chopin's nocturnes and they are amazing, I love the little jazzy bits in there, something similar to that would be greatly appreciated, as well :)

hmm, let's  try something off the 'common path'

might look to 'discovery' cecile chaminade's piano music,  she had such a lovely style

from six etudes de concert, op  35 no 2 'autumn'

i like these 'bridge composers' a lot lately, like hummel was to 'classical -> romantic' it has been said chabrier was the 'classical-romantic -> impressionism' as it is said debbussy, ravel, satie and others were great admirers of his work.

you mentioned you liked the 'hint of jazzy'  i really couldn't do a 'rep recc'  without a plug for my dearly beloved piano collections.

this modern prelude by hamauzu is so soothing. his collection here is heavily influenced by satie, impressionistic composers in general and a bit of jazzy seasoning to make it 'just right'

from the piano collections for final fantasy vii, really love this soft sentimental arrangement with jazz influences, considering the'repetitive' almost technoish nature of the original, this is quite the improvement

If you enjoy Satie and Chopin, you'll probably like Debussy, Fauré, Ravel, Chaminade and some modern composers like Ludovico Einaudi. :)

I cannot really recommend to you, as I do not know what kind of composer's style you like. Try Bach Patita 2, Mozart Eine Kleine Nautmusik, Chopin Grande Valse Brillante op 18 and Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 3 :) Hope you will enjoy
